Ryan McLaughlin is meticulous with his craft. I played a Garavaglia cello for years (owned by my mom). After 9 years away from that instrument, I tried it again and was astonished at how much better it was than when I had last played it. My mother had taken it to Ryan for a new bridge and soundpost. I now play a wonderful cello by Charles Rufino; I had needed a thicker fingerboard for many years (too springy) and wanted to try a Belgian bridge. Ryan made the larger, thicker fingerboard and extended the nut to reduce string length, and made a new bridge and sound post. I could not be happier. The instrument rings freely now, speaks immediately, and is louder and easier to play than ever. Pitches fall exactly where I wish they would (although I still have to get used to it). It's not even a subtle improvement, it is a tremendous one. I will go back to Ryan for any and all major repair work. My only hope when people learn there is a world class luthier in McLaughlin Violins is that he'll still have time to work on my instrument.

Ryan has done excellent work on my cello. He most recently cut a custom bridge for my cello and was very considerate towards the needs of my instrument. His focus and clarity has my cello sounding the best it ever has! I also have really appreciated his honest feedback and fair pricing. I could not recommend him enough.

McLaughlin Violins is my favorite luthier in Chicago. Ryan’s remarkably clean work, skilled ear and fair pricing set this violin shop apart from most others in the Fine Arts Building. McLaughlin has an excellent selection of instruments and bows in both the advanced student to professional level price range. My recent purchase of one of his Nicolò Amati styled instruments is a wonder of traditional details and sonic refinement.
